Introduction - What is Alzheimer's Disease?
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of
the brain, which causes thinking and memory to become seriously
impaired. It is the most common form of dementia. (Dementia is
a syndrome consisting of a number of symptoms that include loss
of memory, judgment and reasoning, and changes in mood, behaviour
and communication abilities. Related diseases include: Vascular
Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and
Lewy body Dementia.)
The disease was first identified by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906.
He described the two hallmarks of the disease: "plaques"
- numerous tiny dense deposits scattered throughout the brain
which become toxic to brain cells at excessive levels and "tangles"
which interfere with vital processes eventually "choking"
off the living cells. As well, when brain cells degenerate and
die, the brain markedly shrinks in some regions.
As Alzheimer’s disease progresses and affects different
areas of the brain, various abilities become impaired. The result
is changes in abilities and/or behaviour. At present, once an
ability is lost, it is not known to return. However, research
is now suggesting that some relearning may be possible.
What we're doing to help.
As I mentioned, Alzheimers runs in my family. We've watched a
few family members lose themselves to this disease. This is why
we have chosen to support the Alzheimers Society.
The breakdown of giving of the $47 is:
30% to the Charity
30% to the Affiliates
30% to my family
10% admin fees
I wish I could give 60% to the charity but I have a wife and
kids...and they are expensive...well the kids much more than Melanie.
My daughter Jessica is 12 and wants to be an Anesthesiologist.
Doesn't that take 25 years of schooling? Her plan is Degree 1
in Canada, Post Degree in England. Then I'll have to call her
Dr.Jess but I've already told her, we'll be moving in with her
to take care of her pool.
My son Brody is 10 and has big dreams of playing in the NBA.
Of course he will have to major in something as he's playing basketball,
so he's thinking Robotics and engineering. (Thanks to Tony Dyson
the creator of R2 D2 for pointing him in that direction)
Have you any idea what University is going to cost me???
So the plan is to sell 65,000 copies of the Motivational Interviews...so
if you know anyone who is need of a weekly boost of inspiration,
please send them to this site.
Thanks. Together we can make this goal come true!
Thank you for caring enough to read this.
